FAQ's

Why should I support Habitat?
The Habitat for Humanity program offers families assistance in changing their living situation for the better. The program offers families who cannot qualify for a conventional mortgage the opportunity to become homeowners. By moving a family into home ownership, Habitat helps to make a stable economic base in the community. Homeowners pay taxes, which turn support the growth and development of the community.

How is Habitat different from other programs?
Habitat is a program that offers a long-term solution, rather than a quick fix. Habitat offers families in need a "hand up" rather than a "handout". Families are prepared for the responsibilities of homeownership through training. In addition, families take an active role in the construction of their homes. Families then purchase their homes through a zero interest mortgage.

Do families have to pay a down payment?
No.  Families agree to work at least 300 Work Equity hours as part of their agreement to partner with Habitat.  The homes are sold to the partner families in a zero down payment, zero interest mortgage.  There is, however, a commitment that they pay $500 towards their first year’s homeowners insurance.

How does Habitat assist the Sponsor in constructing the home?
Habitat’s construction coordinator orders the major materials and handles all inspection and subcontractors.  He is also at the construction site every day to aid the site supervisor in coordinating the day’s activities.  The construction coordinator, in conjunction with the construction committee, meets with each sponsor in advance of the build to give aid in answering questions and providing direction.

Why should my organization sponsor a Habitat home?
Thousands of families in our community live in inadequate apartments, homes and other forms of shelter.  Your organization can do something about it.  As the members of your organization work side-by-side along with the selected family and other partner families in our program, your organization will be united, perhaps as never before, by this giving partnership.  The team building that happens as groups join together to help build Indianapolis is unequaled by any other experience.
