NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY TO VOLUNTEER
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis is a volunteer-driven organization. We welcome people from all walks of life to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with God and families in need...and building homes takes much more than pounding nails!

Our Habitat volunteers contribute in numerous invaluable ways. Folks from all over Indy offer a helping hand in our office, HomeStore and out on the jobsite on a daily basis. Kindness, creativity, strategy, and technical skills are among the many invaluable traits volunteers bring to Habitat. Out on the jobsite, the vast majority have no construction experience or building skills yet we involve our build site volunteers in all of the fun and challenging phases of construction. By working side-by-side with the family who will live in the house, our volunteers experience for themselves the abounding joy that is born when a family is able to realize their dream of home ownership.

With minimal full-time staff, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis depends upon volunteer committees for support with projects such as Family Selection, Family Support, Public Relations, Construction Skills Training and Volunteer Services.

We invite you to become involved in the way that best suits you. Whether you are wearing a hard hat on the build site, assisting in the office, helping in the HomeStore or serving with special projects and committees, the heart and energy you give will go a long distance. We are happy to work with your schedule and have you come join us as time permits for you. Some volunteers stop by for a few hours between classes in college, and others have daily or weekly time to dedicate as a cashier in our HomeStore or an assistant in our office. As a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis, you can choose to volunteer as little or as often as you would like. Every hour given is a tremendous help that directly or indirectly moves us toward our goal of spreading hope through God's love... and a new home.

HIGHLIGHTED Volunteer Opportunities:
Family Mentors Needed!

WHO:     Family PAL (Mentor)
              * In search of 30+ mentors
WHEN:   One to two year time commitment (Meet with families 1-2 times per month)
WHERE: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis Office, 1011 E. 22nd Street
HOW:     If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Jennifer Coffey, Family Services Manager, at 317-921-2121 ext. 122 or via email, Contact Email

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Our Family Mentors are an integral part of Habitat. Each PAL has the opportunity to work one-on-one with a deserving family preparing to own a home!

To adequately prepare our PAL's for the experience, we offer to each Family PAL training courses through the Money Mentor Program provided by Purdue Extension Cooperative Services.  PAL's are paired with one Habitat partner family. PAL's support the family throughout the home ownership program as they complete their sweat equity hours, home ownership education, the home purchase process and adjust to new responsibilities. Our PAL's also play an important role in fostering a continued partnership between the families and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis.

Here is an example of a Family Mentoring Success Story - this could be you!
Brenda Gibbons was Vanessa's mentor. About June or July of 2006, Vanessa lost her job. She worked at Next to New and due to funding of the little shop, after 50+ years it closed. She was making a good wage, had benefits and was secure with her job and then she lost it in a blink of an eye. To be in the program and to become a homeowner you have to have certain means of income and with the loss of her job, she did not have any income. She was three months away from building her home. Vanessa did not have a diploma and had not gotten her GED. She needed to make the same amount or close and also something without having to have a GED/diploma. Brenda was instrumental in helping Vanessa get GED information, helping her to apply to companies and also just there to lend a hand. Without Brenda and a few other instrumental individuals on her buildsite, we would not be able to call Vanessa a homeowner today. Vanessa was able to find a job at Clarian. There they will help her get her GED and also is paying here the income she needed and benefits she needed to sustain her family of 7.
